Those of you who have been nice enough to follow this blog (thanks Dad!) are probably wondering where the previously-promised humorous and embarrassing anecdotes are about my kids. While I haven’t seen my kids enough in the last two weeks to compile the aforementioned stories, I DID have an epiphany as I was flying home from client meetings a week ago: my life has become a never-ending marathon of sprints.
Take, for example, the last two weeks. My usual coffee-fueled agenda includes a constant stream of conference calls, email, client projects, medical appointments, Aidan’s physical therapy sessions, soccer practice/games, Cub Scout meetings, volunteering at church, the usual household stuff (paying bills, returning calls, scheduling flu shots, etc.) and kid management (also known as “screen supervision” and “my life as the human alarm clock”). Since this is the fall, this list does not include theatrical rehearsals or ski team pick-up/drop-off. Those will come later.
In the last ten days we have thrown into the mix: college planning for the high school senior, managing a major campaign for a client, searching for a new assistant, finalizing the refinance of our mortgage, braving the wilds of rural Wisconsin to attend a day-long college preview with our daughter, racing back home to host a game tournament-themed birthday party for the youngest (note to self: cans of soda, Pixie Stix and more than ten 10/11-year-old boys DO NOT MIX), and a four-day business trip to California.
And IT NEVER ENDS.
And I’m not even doing this alone. My husband is actually helpful. I work with a great team of professionals who share my load. My in-laws do everything around here from our yard work to my Costco runs. And my friend Gen routinely taxis my kids around, even though she has six of her own to shuttle about.
I’m exhausted just thinking about it. When can I take a nap?
